I was in the market for a dac streamer that I didn’t want to pay for stuff I didn’t need or want and the pecan rev3 hit the mark. I’m a senior citizen that doesn’t know all the current vernacular for describing the sound so all I can say it sounds wonderful. Excellent sound stage, bass responce was superb. Basically it really fits all my needs. Simple and sounds great.

TL/DR: Sounds amazing. Extraordinary customer service. Highly recommended.
I have wanted to add a streamer to my hifi for a while – Rega Brio, KEF LS50s, CD and record player. But which one and what sort? Roon? Sonos? Bluetooth? WiFi? I went down the rabbit hole of reviews and forums.
I am not a technophobe by any means, but a lot of the info I found was too technical and confusing. I just wanted a plug-and-play streamer for Tidal and was thinking of getting an Audiolab 600N. I didn’t want to spend too much as the tech seems to be advancing.
Then I read a John Darko piece about Raspberry Pi streamers and thought that seemed like an elegant solution but one that was too much of a DIY project for me to do by myself. More Googling and I found Orchard Audio.
Here’s a dude (Leo) in New Jersey with “decades of engineering expertise” at big companies making reasonably priced streamers that get great reviews. What’s not to like?
I bought the PecanPi, it arrived really quickly. It’s small, sturdy and has a solid, homemade feel that I love. I couldn’t wait to try it out.
I chose the Volumio option after discussion with Leo. Plugged it in and nothing. Ugh. I rebooted everything (all very IT Crowd). Nothing. So I emailed Leo. Ten minutes later he had emailed me back. The problem was fixed (turned out it was just some glitch in my internet) but it was clear to me that Leo was on the case if I had issues.
So now it is up and running and it’s phenomenal. Hifi descriptions of sound are as impossible as wine reviews, it’s so subjective, one man’s blackberry and slate is another’s blueberry and tar. But for me the PecanPi (in my smallish NY apartment) is big, detailed, has a great, intimate, 3D feel and sounds as good playing Satie as it does the Oh Sees.
Very happy customer. Thank you!
UPDATE
18 months plus later and I still love it.
I had a power out or some such that the Pi did not like. Leo fixed it for me for a very reasonable fee. As always excellent communication and the best customer service. Will be upgrading to Pi+ in the near future.

This device is the successful result of excellent engineering. After weeks of listening sessions, I can say that the low, mid and high pitches are very balanced. The result of this is a distinctive property for relaxed long-term listening. Note that these attributes come into their own when peripherals are carefully chosen. This means the USB to S/PDIF converter, the 75ohm coax cable, a high-quality power supply for the Dac and converter, good power cables and of course a class-adequate RCA output cable. The Pecan Pi is not the limit but rather the surrounding periphery.

Works good, sounds good. More support documents on website would be appreciated. Using Volumio, seems to loose connection often, assuming it’s Volumio. Not a fan of Volumio’s support documents either, hard to find good info, better format would be appreciated.
Shipping from Orchard Audio to Canada was expensive. Was sent via FedEx and was billed a $50 Clearance Entry Fee and a $10 Disbursement fee on top of the expected Shipping, GST and PST costs.

I bought two PecanPi streamers about a month ago to replace two Sonos Ports (I use the PecanPis as Roon endpoints). Vast improvement over the Port in being able to play lossless over Tidal and play my higher bitrate flac content, and just sounds much better. I’m not a highly technical guy in my audio evaluations but I know it when I hear it, and this is “it.”

Bear with me, this is a bit long…To preface, I used to own Lumin streamers awhile back, first the D2 then the vaunted T2 and I really enjoyed both of them with my Harbeth C7es3’s and Croft Integrated but unfortunately I had to sell the T2 and was without a streamer for awhile. Then I bought an Arcam St60 because of good reviews but it was not satisfying in the long run so I sold it thinking I would try separates again which is where I started years ago.
During my search my attention was drawn to the Pecanpi streamer which was intriguing and much less than I had planned to pay. I bought one and after a few days of break in I was floored to say the least. It’s one of the most honest/detailed/natural sounding dacs I’ve ever heard bar none. I tortured myself over whether to keep it or not because I had still read so much about the r2r dacs that are all the rage and the bug bit me to try a Denafrips Pontus II with a zen stream. As I said, original intention was separates.
Well, as I type this I’m sitting here listing to that combo, which while it sounds very nice, is not drawing me into the music and grabbing me and not letting me go the way the PecanPi did. It’s not hyperbole when I say it’s one of the best and most involving listening experiences I’ve ever had the time I spent with the pecanpi, just mesmerizing. So now I’m kicking myself and figuring out how to fix this situation and get a pecanpi back in my life and not let it go this time. Big mistake! Do not be fooled by the price, this streamer is special!

Overall is okay. But I just know that Volumio + PecanPi + Tidal = 44.1 or 48kHz as the highest resolution.
Now I am consider switching to Roon. I think it is an option I have to choose when I purchase. I will ask the Orchard audio if the switching is possible later on.

Hello,
Tidal can play up to 24/192 on the PecanPi Streamer for non-MQA tracks that support this resolution. All MQA tracks will play but will not be unfolded. If you use Roon it will do the first unfold for you.
If you are looking for the best audio quality I recommend QOBUZ as the streaming service to use.
Regarding switching from Volumio to Roon, yes this can be done.
Regards;
Leo

It’s such an easy streamer and DAC to just plug in and start using. I love that it’s my Roon endpoint and works every time, no issues. I even have the SPIDF option for my CD transport. FYI, If you plug in the SPDIF it cancels out the Roon streaming.

WOW! Just WOW! My Pecan Pi arrived yesterday, and I had it up and running in no time. Right away, I find the sound to be highly addictive and I am constantly drawn to the music. I have a fairly large, open living area and tend to listen from the dining area now I have started moving my workspace to the living area. I am also pleasantly surprised by the heft of this little black box. It’s definitely got some weight to it. Thank you Leo for a top-notch product and most importantly, your top-notch service.

Love this gear. I was streaming using an iPad into a DragonFly Red (which is very good sonically and I love it for portability) but the PecanPi took my streaming to a new level. Soundstage and imaging fantastic. Listening to Rosalia’s latest as I write this, would swear she is in the room. No compromises here … highly recommended, you won’t regret it. Great service and Leo’s personal touch just make it all the more special.

Love it. Sound is brilliant. Bought Chord Mojo while I was waiting for this, no comparison. Will be selling the mojo.
Using it as a headphone amp with my Hifiman Sundara headphones – think it possibly out resolves these.
After hearing this would love to hear your Starkrimson Streamer amp but will have to save up.

Out of the box using Tidal I find the depth and width of soundstage more constrained than expected and the overall presence lacking. My hope is things improve with break-in. It’s possible the wall wort power supply is also holding it back. I’m comparing this to a raspberry pi 3 B+/Allo Digione streamer into a PS Audio GainCell ESS delta-sigma Dac. And a Bluesound Node. Currently it’s similar to the Node, was hoping to improve on that.

Nothing but praise for the product, after sale support and creator. The pecan pi is exactly what I was looking for – a minimalist designed streamer with solid Dac that puts sound quality first. No bells or whistles or anything else for that matter that would detract from sound quality. Nothing is plastic or feels cheap about it. On the contrary, it’s made like a little tank. The case is heavy gauge steel, the volume knob is metal… and yeah, it sounds great… several notches up in clarity vs my previous computer/dac combo. Highly recommended! Thank you Leo!!!

I purchased this beautiful streamer and to be honest I’m actually very impressed with the quality in every aspect that you can think off; it’s built like a tank. The sound quality it’s incredible! I was using a BlumeHD on my system and I replaced it with the Pecanpi Streamer it’s like day and night difference! The Highs sound so beautiful, mids so clean and detailed and bass is more extended in my opinion, great people to work with, Leo is ones of the best guys that I have meet in this industry. Now I get to enjoy the hart of every song that I play. Thanks Leo!!

I’ve had the Pecan Pi Streamer for almost a year now and can’t get away from it. The level of detail and depth of soundstage it renders draws me in. There’s no signs of compression or lack of detail with great recordings using Tidal Forget MQA. It’s not needed. I have the Bluesound Node which has a great GUI,but it doesn’t come close in audio performance. Currently I’m using the Pi with Focal Kanta No 2 and the Pecanpi dedicated DAC with the Bluesound Node in my Sopra No 3 system. It’s so good that I may need to buy a dedicated streamer for the Sopras and part with the Bluesound Node.

I’ve been very impressed with this product. I’m always skeptical of something that frequently gets described as a giant killer. While there are no unicorns this really does punch well above its price point. It drives most headphones to more than sufficient volume with plenty of headroom to spare. The sound is clean and revealing without being overly bright. I have been a user of the Raspberry Pi for years. The setup and configuration of this is quite painless and should not be scary for even the most beginner and user.

As with most of us its been a long road to happiness with digital music. I was listening to music on itunes/ imac directly into my receiver via 3.5 cable to rca. I was happy that it worked but it was a let down. So i tried a few changes Audiravana and Jriver bumped things up a bit. A schiit modi help some but when i got elac unifi 2.0 speakers i realized there was a world of sound i was missing out on. Getting the source out of the mac and on to the pecanPi Streamer opened those speakers up in ways i couldn’t have imagined. I was a little apprehensive about Volumio and thought a Bluesound node 2i might be better. Do i want a good UI or do i want good sound? I am so glad i went with good sound! The pecanPi is far better than i could have imagined. Once i figured out how to use LMS with squeezebox the interaction with my music became effortless. Months later i still get tingle on my neck when hearing things i never heard before in music I’ve known for ages.

So far the streaming Qobuz or Tidal to the PecanPi has been pure pleasure. Coming from Sonos this is a huge upgrade in sound quality. For one, the noise floor is so low, the music just comes through more clearly. Secondly, everything suddenly sounds more dynamic. I was feeling like I needed to upgrade my speakers until i started using the PecanPi, they sound like better, more complete speakers now. The way the dual Burr Brown DACs are implemented in this little (but very well made and sturdy) unit easily rival much more expensive DACs out there. Lastly, the customer service the owner Leo provides is bar none, he will always personally answer your questions or concerns and in a very timely manner. What else could you want?

Love my Pecanpi streamer. I initially knew nothing about this steamer and how it worked. Watched a short review from someone I tend to trust regarding Hifi and the rest is history. Pretty easy to get up and running, with the very good instructions. I opted for the Volumio version and it’s worked well. Performance is top tier, a great value considering its a streamer, dac, headphone amp combo. Build quality is excellent, case is like a tank, great volume knob. This thing sounds fantastic, I highly recommend

The Pecan Pi streamer is the first stand alone DAC I have purchased. I wanted it to add fidelity to my aging Peachtree Nova integrated amp, and as a Roon endpoint. Set up was straightforward. (Leo at Orchard Audio was quick to respond to an email during setup) and My Roon app quickly saw and enabled the Pi. I was soon streaming hi-res files. The Pecan Pi delivered a clear jump on clarity, detail, and soundstage to all music I sent to it. This is a fantastic audiophile product at a reasonable price. Highly recommended!

I had tested the Leo’s DAC fee months back and was impressed with the sound quality and instruments separation the PecanPi DAC was able to deliver. That time I was mainly testing it using my headphones and PC. Recently I upgraded my 2ch listening spot and was in need of a streamer with great DAC. So I went back to Leo and ordered his streamer. I must admit, the hardware part of PecanPi streamer is top of the top quality. I never expected my flac files would sound so juicy and detailed while streamer over the network. Volumio works pretty well with Spotify and my own Plex/DLNA server. From time to time I had issues connecting to my server, but those are small issues compared to the sound quality. As my integrated amp doesn’t have a built-in DAC, the PecanPi streamer is a perfect solution for me. Previously, I tried Bluesound and Audio-lab streamers, and their software part is not perfect either, while with PecanPi you get the much more advanced DAC developed and created by Leo.

First of all–had some issues initially with the unit. Was a bad rasberry pi board. Leo was great to work with and we got that straightened out. Then I had issues getting my network to play nicely with it, so for awhile I really thought maybe it just wasn’t for me. But now, network is mostly sorted though it does disconnect every few days–I currently just leave it on all the time.
I cannot compare it to any other networked streamers but I like the dac itself equally with the RME adi-2 and like it more than all other dacs I have tried.
Really a bargain for such a detailed machine. I am currently running it on a Pass clone F6, B1 with Korg triode pre-amp and A26 kit speaker fitted into some old advent legacy cabinets. Really mind blowing setup and thought I would never get to this level, so I am pretty pleased to find a way to get here at this relatively low cost. Will try Leo’s amps next.

As a non-audiophile I can’t give a precise analytical description of how this works its magic, but I can say that it has reinvigorated my love of music more than any other component purchase I can recall. All digital files and streaming services sound better and, while Volumio does have its quirks and a little bit of a learning curve, the added test convenience of access from my mobile devices is a big plus. As a bonus, when I had questions during my initial setup Leo was incredibly responsive and generous with his time. Recommended without reservation.

I am a passionate listener of quality music of all genres. A few days ago, I enriched my audio set with a PecanPi card. I listened to all types of digital files wav, flag, m4a. It was a big advance over previous players like the CD player or PC players.
Then I started listening to the flag and dsd 96/24 files, which I couldn’t play well yet. And that was just the sound. I can’t compare it to other digital players or other DACs. I compare it with my vinyl LPs and I have to admit that it’s really comparable. I didn’t trust digital recordings for a long time, but after my experience with PecanPi I changed my mind. From classical music to rock music, it’s a beautiful experience. And the same experience is shared by my friends who listened with me. Simply beautiful sound.

I’ve used a streamer and DAC based on the Raspberry Pi and a middle-of-the-road DAC from the French company Allo, in combination with Volumnio, for the last year or so. The Allo BOSS DAC is based on a single PCM5122 chip for both channels, which I thought does well enough, as my older MB Quart speakers aren’t that great anymore.
Replace the Allo streamer with the PecanPi, and the difference is as night and day. The silences are more noticible, the acoustic guitar is cleaner and comes to life, I can even hear the harmonics on a jazz saxofone again.
So I plugged the older streamer back in to listen to the streamers side-by-side, and it is incredible, the difference. Both streamers are based on the same Raspberry Pi 3B single-board computer, but the DAC hat is different. Leo delivers a better linear power supply with the PecanPi streamer as well, which I’m sure also makes a difference.
I believe the biggest difference is probably the DAC chips. PecanPi has dual PCM5122’s in monaural mode, where The Allo BOSS uses only one for both channels. The quality of the other components and connections certainly make a contribution, but just trusting my ears on a side by side comparison, there is a huge difference.
I’m building new speakers using Orchard Audio mono block amps in the speakers (powered, thus), and will be streaming directly with XLR to the speakers. Can hardly wait to hear the differences then. Just the excellent quality DAC hat in the PecanPi already makes a huge difference.

I would like to correct your statement about the PecanPi using Dual PCM5122. It uses dual PCM1794As. The 1794A is TI’s flagship DAC.

The Pecan Pi Streamer may be the best value in network audio right now! For the relatively low price you get quality streaming and a great sounding DAC built in. I have almost 10 different streamers right now, a few of which have an internal DAC and can do analog out; the sound quality from the Pecan Pi Streamer is the best of them all, and to get better you’d likely be spending 4+ times the money.
The sound is fast, detailed, with great top to bottom clarity and extension. It mates very well with the BOSC/Starkrimson mono’s, so I also know the Starkrimson integrated will be a great product as well.

My PecanPi came quickly, the set up with Roon was instantaneous. The sound is awesome. This is a set It and forget it streaming appliance. High recommended!

Wow! As an owner of three digital to analog music systems – the SOtM Ultra Trio, Allo’s Kantana with two TeraDak LPSs, and now Orchard’s PecanPi, it is amazing to me just how good the all in one end point units have become. Summary – The PecanPi is a no-brainer purchase for anyone looking to stream hi-resolution music to their stereo system. The Allo Kantana, the unit my PecanPi will now replace, was no slouch and an excellent unit in its own right…but, there are a number of things I like better about the PecanPi.
But before I go into a comparison between the similarly priced Allo Kantana and the PP, I have to disclaim the advantages the Allo Kantana had during this comparison (to an off the shelf PecanPi). a) The Kantana was powered with two TeraDak LPS (which added about $300 to the base cost). The PecanPi was set-up in its base form, which is what Leo recommends. When I bought my Kantana a year ago, purchase of external LPS was highly recommended and I can state 1st hand that the Kantana improved vastly with the addition of each of the two LPS units. The standalone Kantana was lifeless and blurred without LPSs. b) The Kantana was connected with a Kimber KCAG RCA interconnect during the comparison versus the PP equipped with a much less expensive/reviewed LFD RCA interconnect. NOTE: I can hardly wait to hear the PP with its native balanced XLR outputs.
My subjective, comparative impressions (and why I believe the PP is an incredible value):
1) Soundstage – the sound stage thrown by the PP is incredible. Immediately noticeable and quite a benefit if you speakers cannot have optimal placement. With this, the depth of the stage and instrument separation seem to be more precisely placed. The Kantana had what I thought at the time was a great soundstage, but the PP was exceptionally better at this.
2) Ease of listening and midrange delight – the vocals produced by the PP are easy, emotional, and delightful. While the Kantana has its own unique way of producing great sound and range, the PP is just more pleasurable to listen to over extended periods.
3) Ease of set-up and support – this clearly goes to the PP without question. Set-up was simple, well-explained and for the single question that I had for Leo, my answer came within minutes. Allo support was coming from India and whilst it was not bad, it is a world of difference with Orchard Audio. My pontification on this subject is as follows – when one gets into the sub-$500 USD price range, the support for a complex digital component is not set-up to deal with individuals that lack a basic computer skill knowledge and ability to search forums and follow detailed instructions…a point my 26 YO continually reminds me of :). The PP is a unit that I could easily set-up and run. The Allo on the other hand, required considerably different skills and knowledge…that of a 26 YO CS Major.
4) Build Quality – The PP comes in a self-contained steel enclosure that while quite light, is study and substantial when compared to the Allo Kantana’s plastic assembly. The Kantana feels fragile, exposed and flimsy by comparison to the PP. The Kantana is quite easily moved around by the weight of the wires and has exposed electronic parts. Both structurally and aesthetically the PP is an 9/10 and the Allo is a 4/10.
5) Accessories – the PP is built with balanced XLR outputs and Orchard provides a pair of his proprietary RCA adapters for those requiring single ended inputs. Balanced is a big plus for me although all my listening to date has been single-ended RCA. Orchard provides a 3.5mm headphone jack for a very modest charge, allowing those who wish to use headphones to connect in.
I am really blown away with the quality, versatility, and sound of Orchard’s PP. It is a magnificent leap forward for digital audio and without question a steal at its price.
Please note: I paid for my unit, just like everyone else. My review here was just to provide my personal insights into affordable hi-end audio.
System used to evaluate (because this always comes up) – Roon Nucleaus Server streaming to PP with LFD Spiroflex single-ended interconnects + Allo Kantanta (w/2 TeraDak LPS). The units are connected to an LFD Mk IV SE integrated amplifier connected with LFD Grainless speaker wires to Meadowlark Kestral Hot Rod speakers.

Have owned the unit for about a month now and am very pleased with the performance. I replaced a Logitech Squeezebox Duet feeding a highly regarded mid priced DAC, each powered by aftermarket Channel Island external power supplies, streaming over wifi.
Set up of PecanPi was very easy and quick (10 minutes) using piCorePlayer software option and a cat 6 cable feeding the unit. I choose the direct wire option after Leo told me the sound would be better vs WiFi streaming.
The sound of the unit is quite different from what I had previously experienced. Startlingly so. Vocals are much clearer, with tone, pace and placement much improved. Musical instruments are presented very realistically, all with improved soundstage, depth, placement and decay. More musical in all respects. This unit also allowed me to switch to balanced interconnects vs RCAs which in my system also was an improvement. I run the PecanPi directly to my amp, no preamp and it works perfectly.
Build quality of the unit is very good, very simple, almost minimalist in execution.
I corresponded with Leo several time, asking question about the unit and set up and each time his response was prompt, professional, informative and courteous.
I will end in stating the Orchard PecanPi DAC/streamer is a bargain and so far a joy to use. It performs well above it’s modest cost and is a steal in the realm of audio. Thanks Leo for a great piece of audio gear.

I tried the PecanPi to see if I could simplify my current digital front-end and achieve an equivalent sound quality.
My system comprises a Mac mini i7, as a Roon end-point and server, networked to a SOtM sMS 200Ultra, neo which feeds – via USB – a Mutec MC3+ USB re-clocker and SPDIF converter, which in turn feeds – via SPDIF – a Dac Dac! It’s a system that I’ve modified, through empirical testing over 5 years, to try and extract the best sound I can out of digital music files and streaming services like Tidal; without breaking the bank on truly hi-end equipment.
I’m not going to say that the PecanPi bettered or equalled the sound of my system – because to my ears it didn’t – but for a fraction of the cost the sound it produced was most definitely amazing value for money. If you need, or want, a one-box, no nonsense solution to your digital/streaming front end then you must try the PecanPi. You’ll have to invest a lot more money, and your precious time, to find a better solution. I also think it would be a fantastic digital/streaming addition to a second system if you are looking for great sound on a low budget and simplicity of set up.

I have been trying many DACs for my PI but never splashed out, until now, on the PecanPI. It’s different, it is better, it is worth the money. My first impression is that the PPI is bright and basey, but it is not bright, it reveals the detail that is missing from other DACs. Most music sounds different. The bass is deeper, solid and well-controlled, it does shake the room and you feel it. No need for a sub if you have one, you’ll get rid of it. The mids have depth, you can hear the “ringing” when the hammer hits the note on the piano or when the stick hits the drum, you feel it too. The highs are remarkable, you can distinguish the cymbal position, size, types, each one sounds different. The soundstage is pushed back, behind the speakers, very-pleasing, relaxing and it’s wider and deeper. Music never sounds complex, just enriched with detail. WOW!

I needed to find a streamer to play my music from PC to my aeging, but still excellent hifi system. I read a review of the PecanPi and emailed Leo. He responded almost instantly, even though I’m in Australia, and I ordered my unit.
It arrived this morning, and to say I’m blown away is an understatement. I’m not up on the latest jargon, but to me, the treble on my Kef T27s was just that little bit more airy, and the bass from the B139s sounded deeper, and tighter. So far I’m only listening to DSD64s, but I’ll be working through my entire collection. That’s going to take me a while!
Congratulations, Leo, on a truly outstanding product.

Leo,
Ive recieved my pecan pie streamer and I am pleased.
I had been using an Allo Boss.
Pecan Pie had better defined bass and a better punch. The higher tones of the bass were tighter.
Instruments were separated much better which allowed for me to hear subtle sounds in the music id not heard on previous listens.
Has a brighter over all sound vs The Allo.
Not easy for me to describe sound with words but i like how it sounds than my Allo Boss so thx for all your work

Immense detail, clarity and depth of soundstage – all presented in a highly neutral soundscape! For me, it’s a perfecct fit in my Roon household… Roon endpoint, exceptional DAC, headphone amp, ethernet or wifi, high quality volume control in hardware and/or software, all within a single, small box. Love it!
