Our modestly sized church has a 60′ long x 45′ wide main sanctuary, with a centralized frontal alcove 20′ wide x 15′ deep to provide a back stage for worship band and teaching pulpit. Immediately on either size of the alcove opening, two 4′ tall Innovox ULA-12.8 mid/tweet line arrays are stacked (to 8′ height) and pasted directly to the left/right front walls. The bases of the line arrays stand atop our 2′ tall stage, which fills the alcove, and underneath we have centrally located a stereo pair of dual 15″ bass woofer cabinets, Innovox Audio SB-215, lying on their sides. A highly modified DBX Venu 360 Speaker Controller handles crossover, channel routing and EQ to the six speakers, in turn driven by four Orchard Audio SK-25 amps for mid/tweet, two O.A. Ultra Mono 500W for the woofers. The real kicker here is that the system sensitivity as configured gives us 100db output from 1 watt to each speaker! Truly a test of an amplifier’s mettle, especially considering that all amps are looking at 2 to 2.5 ohm loads. Sound quality is everything to us . . . . . The speakers are nearlly 20 years old, but have not suffered during that time and are still fully serviceable; the last combination driving them was a heavily modified Behringer DCX-2496 into three stereo QSC PLX 3102 amps – 600W/channel at 8 ohms. As you can imagine, the recent upgrade to the above configuration had earth-shaking consequences, in every positive way. First, relieving the remote location needed to rack mount and cool the large, noisy, hot-blooded power amps, which then necessitated speaker cabling of up to 25 feet. The strategically compact and cool-running Starkrimsons were optimally mounted near the speakers, no cable is longer than 6 feet! Then, no need for fans, as the all the O.A. amps are quite happy with their workloads which, even at steady 100 db in the sanctuary, amount to roughly 3-5 watts per amp. We were immediately stunned by the quickening of all transients, which were now sharply defined without grain or etching, and their rapid natural decay into the black depths of the O.A. noise floor. Remember, 1 watt could give us 100db of output, so noise really is a factor in our quiet sanctuary! The expansiveness and integrity of the soundstage breathed in concert with the music, startlingly more alive and present, more naturally compelling than previously. Dynamics in all tonal ranges were especially arresting, impressive, quickly squashing the earlier idea that we might need to go to 18″ woofers. No way! Leo, in his own quiet way, is fronting a revolution in value and quality for a wide variety of music lovers. In the world of professional music technology for live sound, Orchard Audio deserves not only a place there, but a prominent one. During the initial setup of the new system the blending and coherence of all the drivers was so seamless, so well knit together, we found ourselves listening mistakenly to just the left channel, believing we were hearing both!

In the past no Class D could convince me sound wise . A few months back I did get the chance to test the Krimson 25 premium mono by joining the Starkrimson Europe tour . This is the first Class D which doesn’t sound as a Class D . For me it’s sounding alive with emotion . So I bought 2 modules , after my amp is finished I write a new review .

Thr module is very straightforward to install, just two leads to solder in. It is very neatly designed, too, and of course the sound quality is excellent. The recommended PSUs are easy to find and not over expensive and so the DIY route is not too hard and it provides excellent value.

This amp module sounds great, compare to the icepower 1200AS2 I’ve used for years, the sound is clear, more micro details and a very good 3D feeling, as I listen mostly classical music, that’s the characteristic I really appreciate.
However, as diyer I have 2 comments
1. I wish it come with mating plug and pins for power connection, or provide the option to add to the package, when this is the only things you need to buy from mouser then have to pay $10 shipping for only $2 order
2. I had a little hard time to solder the output, I use 14awg solid copper wire, the hole size is ok, but the copper area surround the hole is too small, it’s better to have more copper, or come with pre-soldered connector

I ordered this last month, but only did the build 3 days back. It’s a very straight forward build, especially with videos from Leo on YouTube. Leo’s response on email was also fantastic.
I used a mix of pure silver and copper wires as hookup. Got a soft start module elsewhere for usd7. 20 – it’s good for 2kW supply! Chassis is from eBay at ~usd160, cu WBT binding posts for ~usd171. Neutrik chassis mounts with gold pins for ~usd25.
Didn’t have lots of expectations upon power on, but the first thing I noticed was the bass. It’s hooked up to my Pass Labs Int-60 running as a preamp, and SB Accoustics Ara Be speakers, with a Cambridge Audio CXN100 streamer.
I feel it’s a very good sounding amplifier across the frequency range. Will be doing lots more listening, and a group session with some friends the coming weekend.

Over the last couple of months I have been evaluating the latest Starkrimson 25 boards that Leo kindly sent me. These have been incorporated in a DIY dual LPSU build using a 800VA transformer, 60000uF per channel power supply capacitance running on 54V power rails. The build could not have been simpler, first connect a transformer to a single rail power supply board which in turn is connected to the amplifier board. Then connect up the XLR inputs and the loudspeaker outputs and you’re done!
Compare this with a Purifi build where you first of all have to select an input buffer board and then provide multiple power supplies to cover both the main and buffer boards. If your not content using a Hypex switched mode supply and want to get the benefits of a LPSU then the build complexity rises significantly. Thumbs up to Orchard here for keeping it simple by having both the buffer and all the power management happening on the board itself.
In terms of sound quality I have to say I’m very impressed with what the Starkrimson 25 can deliver. Firstly forget notions of Class D delivering a recessed mid range and glassy top end. This delivers a presentation which is full bodied, engaging, clean and detailed. There is no trace of edginess or harshness and imaging was spot on where you can hear the player location not only in the front plane but behind as well. Perhaps the biggest complement I can give is when listening I had no desire to switch amps and never did I think ‘I’m listening to Class D’. Also in the past I have dabbled in a valve pre to add the ‘body and tonality’ that might be missing. Since using the Starkrimson 25 I have had no such desire or thoughts. I don’t think many will be pairing these amps with valve pre’s to add body and warmth, maybe to get some of the valve magic of ‘airiness’ but not to change the tonality!
In terms of speaker matching I have been using mostly Magnepan 1. 7’s which the Orchard drives really well to high volumes. I’ve also used some Buchardt S400 II’s which also paired well. I don’t think speaker pairing will be a problem for most users.
One final thing I would consider using Leo’s input buffer board to get the most out of the Starkrimson 25 and I was using one of these boards in my evaluation. Yes it’s an extra 199 USD but worth the extra investment IMO, some XLR outs often don’t sound as good as their phono equivalents. At least thats the case with my source, a Naim Uniti Atom Headphone Edition.

I had many different generations of class D amps, mostly from Hypex and the got much better over time but always they had issues with high frequency. So I thought I should try a GaN based amp module as their much higher switching frequency could be an improvement especially in the upper octaves and my expectations were more than fulfilled. I am using it above 150Hz for mono amps (line level analog crossover) and the mods and highs sound much more natural and coherent.
