I haven’t done this sort of project in a very long time and so I had a few questions. I emailed for support and Leo was kind and patient enough to help me understand what needed to be done to get my PecanPi DAC 3.0 KIT working.
I also have a Bluesound Node [N130], which I have been using directly with the same amplifier for quite some time and the PecanPi DAC blows it away.
The PecanPi DAC has a lower noise floor, a larger and deeper soundstage, greater resolution of detail and better dynamics and pacing.
I’m loving it!
Thanks Leo

I am really enjoying listening to it. The streamer is easy to set up (using Volumio Premium with Qobuz with some DSP for room correction) and works seamlessly.
The automatic SPDIF streamer bypass works better for me with the RPi3 than the RPi4 because the RPi 4 gets quite hot and needs a well ventilated area, which mine doesn’t really have. It works very well now. I think the RPi3 is probably the ideal partner.

Hi Leo,
I know PecanPi+ is said to be an significative upgrade to the dual Burr Brown 1794A PecanPi I recently choosed but I wanted to know what I could get from the Burr Brown tech first. Why ? Because, I always prefered my iFi Dacs than the ESS Sabre or AKM ones I owned over the years.
At this point, I just have to say that your Pecan Pi is just the best DAC I ever owned ad that I’m full confident in what I will be able to get from your brand, Leo.
Thanks for your amazing talentious engagement, friend !
Kind Regards,
Pierre – ARKHEOSS Acoustics

The PecanPi DAC is an amazing value. Was easy to pair with my PI to align my Volumio based streamer. Board is designed to go into standard Orchard box. When mounting on a Pi with other stack/layout options, some additional brass spacer / standoffs might be needed for your specific application. Sound is great, and far exceeds my previous USB based DACs. Upgrading other parts of my system to appreciate all of the details and overall sound clarity provided. Documentation / instructions available, but need to search the Orchard site when creating your own configuration.

At first PecanPi sounded like it would make be bloated and add pounds to my waistline.
But after I learned what it was I realized it was exactly what I needed to stream hires music from Tidal or Qobuz and get a super clean and responsive signal into my amp. It’s a great DAC and great value. It was fun to put together. Or you could purchase the ready to go solution.
Leo provides outstanding customer service.

Already an owner of the Pecan Pi streamer and Ultra stereo amp, I got the pecan Pi DAC board to combine it with a R-Pi board and replace the streamer/DAC section of another all-in-one.
As good as that unit was already, the Pecan Pi option was another step up. Better frequency balance, more spacious, more transparent. Gave new life to the unit, and I stayed up late into the evening/morning listening.
Another winner from Orchard Audio!

Easy to install and setup, using Ropieee. Sounds open and spacious, with good rithem and timing. In my office system it integrates well with Scan-speak speakers, thanks to great driving abillity of the amp driving those lowish sensitive speakers. Recommended.

The DAC sounds great!
I purchased the PecanPi DAC and a separate Raspberry Pi because I wanted to try the DIY route.
I had a bunch of questions but Leo always answered them quickly.
Eventually, I also purchased the metal case.
The Youtube video made it super easy to assemble everything.
It all worked out in the end.
Although, my advice would be to just buy the PecanPi Streamer direct from Leo and save a few hours of tinkering.

To save my neighbors from my nightly music sessions I was looking for a perfect solution for years and years. I wasn’t satisfied with conventional headphones du to their lack of space and air in the reproduction of music. Finally, with the Precide ERGO A.M.T., I found a sensationally performing system which is based on Air Motion Transformer transducers hosted in a highly ergonomic frame. So far, a pleasant solution for listening was found but what source should I use?
My Hi-Fi rack is to far away from my listening place to hook up the headphone preamp there, so I looked out for a good Roon and Qobuz enabled streamer. Soon I began experimenting with Raspberry based devices since they offer a lot of flexibility and are quite affordable. I did several iterations with small steps ahead toward my idea of perfect reproduction. In search for a DAC with symmetric outputs I found the PecanPi DAC. First, I was a bit concerned about the high price but again and again I came back to the website of Orchard Audio. So, one day it happened and I ordered a PecanPi DAC with volume potentiometer. It took quite some time for the package to arrive in Switzerland and there was some dispute with the customs office which costed another 50 bucks. However, I had a new toy to experiment with. After five minutes I had to revise my opinion, this wasn’t a toy, this little, unimposing piece of electronic engineering is a jewel.
First of all, I noticed the complete absence of any noise, it is quite as the night is dark. Many competitors had a slight noise floor, which you may not hear on a loudspeaker-based system but annoy headphone listeners.
But having a noise free system is just psrt of the rent. Dynamics, lack of distortion, spatiality, precision, rhythm and a kind of understanding of the music are at least as important. After months of listening to nearby all kinds of music I can attest the PecanPi DAC that it has all these abilities in excess.
My long journey towards a perfect headphone system has finally found a happy end with the PecanPi DAC!
Beside the outstanding qualities of the DAC I must also praise the service of Orchard Audios customer support. To minimize negative influences from the Raspberry to the PecanPi DAC I decided to accommodate them in different enclosures. Orchard Audio was so kind to immediately answer all my questions and support my project in any possible way. Thanks a lot guys!

Dziękuję to najlepiej wydane 300$.
If you think you’ve heard it all, you are wrong. Peacan pi pushes that border. My allo boss with the isolator played great but this card does more than that, it’s magic. The sound is full, soft and analytical. There is space and there is a stage. This has to be experienced. I’ve listened to a lot of players and a lot of streamers have passed through my hands and ears. This one stays with me 100%. Leo great job. Thank you is $ 300 best spent.

This DAC / Roon endpoint sounds great! It blows my Yamaha AV-Receiver out of the water. It is also quite a bit better than my Allo Boss, and has a physical volume control which is quite helpful (especially for headphone listening.)
The headphone amp with adapter is completely noise-free and sounds wonderful with nice imaging as well. Any hiss I hear is on the source (Tidal FLAC) recording.
I purchased the board /case version since I had experience with PI computers, and put it together and loaded the OS (Ropieee) quickly, and saved a bit of money in the process.
I’m looking forward to trying it with a new amp that has Balanced inputs.
Highly Recommended!

It tooks only two days for the PECANPI to be delivered to France. I already have connected different DAC (9028,9038…) through ROPIEEE to my PI, and I can say that PECANPI is the best. As already said in different reviews, very detailed sound without agressivity. No sibilance !
So I am very happy with my purchase.

It is a pleasure to use Pecan Pi DAC board. Especially that it can be connected to any device which has i2s 3.3V output. In my opinion you really get a feeling that you listen to exactly what was recorded in studio.
Very detailed one. Tested it with HEGEL H80 XLR input… and it worked better than original H80 internal DAC.

I installed my PeacinPi-DAC last week … A new world opened for me …. the level of detail, soundstage, bass-mid en highs is improved giganticly!!! I heard things that I never heard before. My previous DAC was a Hifiberry – DAC + PRO , off course another pricelevel, but I never expected that the soundquality is so much improved , no more harshness , gone is the metalic sound.
I power my PeacanPi with a lineair power supply (semi-home build/upgraded).
So my answer to the question :
PecanPi-DAC…. sublime?
Yes !!! it sounds extremely well, if you want better… pay 5-6-7 times more and maybe it is better.

I’ve had several different Pi DAC Hats prior to the Pecan Pi and each one has been better than what I had before, (IQAudio, Allo Piano, Allo Boss), the Pecan beats them all. The bass is deep, solid without sounding hard, soundstage is deep and wide and each instrument is clearly heard, but compared to all those other DACs there seem to be more of everything. I hear detail in areas that although I heard it before, there seems to be MORE detail without being overly bright or harsh which I’ve sometimes had in the past.
It’s like when you buy a dessert from the supermarket, it tastes good, looks good, has all the flavours but THEN, you try the same dessert in a Michelin starred restaurant and WOW!
You know what you’ve been missing, the Pecan Pi.

The PecanPi Dac is a wonderful addition to the RaspberryPi. The soundstage and bass are outstanding with this dac. I have used several Allo and HiFiberry hats this this clearly beats all of them. The only unit I have that compares is the Tau Dac. The Tau has a better mid range but I love the spacing and overall presentation of the PecanPi. I was pleasantly surprised with the heft of the case as I was expecting a cheap lightweight aluminum case. Just a personal preference having nothing to do with sound is I would prefer a not to have the tree logo on the front of the unit. I would prefer less clutter on the front with just Orchard Audio and PecanPi. I would totally recommend this to anyone on the fence considering a purchase.

Hello,
the PecanPi DAC is my fifth DAC for the Raspberry Pi Music system based on Moodeaudio.
The other DACs I’m still using in other rooms are the Hifiberry DAC Pro + , Hifiberry Amp2, Hifiberry DAC/DSP and the All Boss DAC. All devices are working with a Raspberry 3B+ and Moodeaudio (6.4).
Compared to all these other HATs the PecanPi is more detailed, wider sound stage and a clear defined bass.
The PecanPi is working on a Tube amplifier (300B) and Tannoy loudspeaker. It’s a amazing clear, natural and warm sound.
The voices a clear and I can locate every musical instrument on the stage. Thanks Leo for that gorgeous DAC.

I have listened to the Pi for more than two weeks now playing a wide variety of songs. I bought the Pecan as an upgrade to my Hifiberry pro XLR. The Hifiberry is a good DAC in its own right but the upgrade itch led me to two possibilities-the Allo Katana or the Pecan. I opted for the Pecan because I have given up fussing with multiple power supplies as I did with my computer rig.
I’ve been listening to the Pecan via the RCA output using the Sennheiser hd650 as well as the Beyerdynamic Amiron. The on board amp drives these headphones adequately.
The sound? Very balanced, with adequate well defined bass. Midrange is sweet and vocals are well projected. Highs are rich and refined. I enjoy Andre Bocelli ‘s vocals on the Portofino album and the Pecan is really good with the piano passages.
I have also connected the Pecan via XLR to my Loxjie hybrid tube headphone amplifier. I’m not sure whether there’s significant improvement in noise level as the RCA outputs are dead quiet. Anyway I prefer the on board amp at the moment as the Loxjie imposes its sound signature too much.
So, the Pecan is a significant and worthwhile upgrade and worth the investment.

I purchased the predecessor to the PecanPi DAC, which I’ve built with a Raspberry Pi running piCorePlayer and I use a NAs with the Logitech LMS installed as music server. I have worked professionally in the loudspeaker business for more than 20 years and I’ve typically preferred analog sources and I’ve never owned a CD-player. The DAC from Orchard Audio offers incredible value for money. I experience a crystal clear and detailed sound with some of the best stereo imaging I’ve ever heard. he sound is not ear tiring, I can listen for hours, but it is not a “laid back” and relaxing or romantic sound character, but rather dynamic. The system has the capability to render good depth perception, a lot of space is communicated.

Some time ago I got into the Raspberry PI DACs, and I’m quite happy with most of them, they helped me leverage on my averge quality amp/speakers.
I ordered PecanPi expecting only marginal improvement over what I already had. Surprisingly, the increase in sound quality was so obvious, PecanPI managed to lift a veil from my speakers. Highs are so detailed and refined, lows tight and precise, soundstage is fantastic!
Happy customer here!

I am not an audiophile, just an ordinary lover of music. So, I can’t provide a technical review, but what I can say is that my hifi has never sounded this good. This pi makes my music sing and bass punch like nothing has since I stored my record player away and went digital. I second Johnson L, the output packs a punch. Also: Leo was super quick to respond and ever helpful when I had a little glitch in setting this beast up. tx Leo.
