All About the Orchard Audio Stereo Ultra DMC GaN Power Amp …
The Starkrimson Stereo Ultra DMC (dual mono with capacitors) represents our flagship stereo amplifier, delivering the best bass performance and transient response of our stereo amps. It is a compact, high-performance amplifier. Designed for discerning audiophiles, recording professionals, and music lovers who refuse to compromise, it delivers exceptional resolution, lifelike dynamics, and effortless control across every genre. Powered by next-generation gallium nitride (GaN) technology switching at 0.8 MHz and a fully balanced signal path from input to output, this dual mono (independent power supplies for each channel) amplifier delivers speed, precision, and transparency beyond traditional designs. Its advanced proprietary dual feedback architecture unlocks a level of clarity and musicality that redefines what’s possible from an amplifier of its size.
What Makes the Orchard Audio Stereo Ultra DMC GaN Power Amp Special?
What truly sets it apart is the dual mono design with 43,600uF per channel, an amount rarely found in amplifiers of any size. This reservoir provides effortless dynamics, rock-solid bass authority, and remarkable stability under demanding loads.
Here’s a snapshot of the key performance highlights:
- 250 W into 8 Ω / 500 W into 4 Ω — will drive any imaginable loudspeaker
- Fully balanced signal path from input to output for low noise and ultra-clean amplification.
- RCA and XLR inputs, with RCA inputs being converted to true balanced.
- GaN transistor technology for high switching speed and phenomenal transient response.
- 2-ohm capable and 1-ohm stable operation for extremely demanding loads.
- Compact footprint (17.72ʺ × 14.17ʺ × 4.4ʺ) makes placement and installation easy.
- 1200W power supply with 43,600uF of capacitance for each channel
This combination of power, precision, and practical design makes the Stereo Ultra DMC a standout choice in today’s crowded amplifier market. It isn’t just about raw watts — it’s about how those watts translate into musical realism.
Designed for Real-World Music Lovers
While some high-end gear prioritizes looks and/or specs over musicality, Orchard Audio’s approach balances both. The Starkrimson Ultra’s GaN-based Class-D design delivers extremely low noise, combined with low distortion and impressive transient response — giving you clarity and control without heat or wasted power.
Because it’s fully balanced from input to output and built with a modern proprietary dual- feedback design, the Starkrimson Ultra doesn’t just produce power — it preserves the nuance and texture of your recordings. Reviews and listening reports highlight its ability to bring out micro-detail and layering in music that can get lost in lesser amps.
Whether you’re listening to jazz, classical, rock, or electronica, this amplifier stays composed and musical through complex passages.
How the Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra GaN Power Amp Fits Into Your Audiophile System
The Orchard Audio Starkrimson Stereo Ultra DMC is designed to integrate smoothly with balanced preamplifiers and sources. Orchard Audio intentionally focused on balanced XLR connectivity, but this amplifier has RCA inputs that convert the signal to a true balanced one, before being sent to the amplifier stage

Upgrading my system from a home theatre to 2 channel. Purchased a Starkrimson Ultra DMC 2. 5 amplifier to replace my Class D Halcro MC50. Let me say that the StarKrimson with its Gan technology is far superior compared to the Halcro’s Lyrus technology. Much more detailed and open across the board. The Halcro sound was muddled compared to the Starkrimson. My Thiel CS-2. 4Se’s have never sounded so good. Thank you Leo. Extremely happy about my purchase.

I am getting great sound from the Starkrimson Stereo Ultra DMC 2. 5 when diving a pair of Martin Logan ESL electrostatic speakers. My finished basement had a secondary stereo system but no longer – it is at least the equal of my main system in quality. I think that it has to be competitive (or superior) with with anything in its price range. Before buying this amp, I read and watched a lot “gushing” reviews and . . . they were actually accurate. I don’t think that you can go wrong with this amp . . . I am incredibly pleased with this product . . .

Great replacement for my class D PSAudio M1200s. It extended highs and bass but best of all presents a silky detailed middle range that brings out all the harmonics of strings, piano, and reed instruments. Very good at soundstage and instrument placement. As expected the mico dynamics and attacks on percussion was amazing.

Incredible range and clarity. Best amp I have ever owned. Driving Magnapan 1. 7s mostly digital music through my NAD M33. I especially notice the great response and clarity of the midrange. Can’t wait to see what Leo and his team at Orchard Audio bring us next. Actually, not sure what else I need after this amp. . . Perfect.

Hi Leo,
As a new customer, I appreciate your concern about my purchase experience. I am very satisfied with the sound, power, and build quality of the amp. The turn on is quite soft, with one pop sound, similar to my Burson Funk Max Current. It doesn’t bother me. It just indicates high current operation. Performance-wise, this amp effortlessly retrieves the deep details in my music. Yes, I do intend to keep this one! Can we talk about a PecanPi+ Streamer Premium purchase? I was hoping to pay the extra cost to get the Premium model from the promo offer.
Thank you,
Mark

I have a pair of Merrill Audio Taranis amplifier to bi-amp my speakers. Both fail to functions last year. After some searching and reading, I hope to replace them with GaN amplifiers. After narrow down to the GaN, I strated to read review on the avialble options, finally make the decision with Orchard Audio.
After listening to the system connected the Orchard Audio Starkrimson stereo for close to two months. I know the decision is a right one.
The imaging and bass are certainly improve a lot. I have repeat to those songs heard in the past and manage to pick up more ‘information and details’, I spend more time each night listen to my system.
Thank you, Leo for such a wonderful products.

Earlier in 2024 I decided I wanted a bit more power in my amplifier along with an amp that ran a bit cooler and would be able to perform in a closed cabinet.
In December 2024 I purchased this power amplifier along with a Benchmark LA4 to replace my Yamaha A-S2200. I am really enjoying the increased dynamics from the available power. Everything sounds clean. The amplifier is dead quiet and noise that I was previously hearing with some phono cartridges at loud volumes is no longer present.
Great amplifier. Does everything well. Sounds “louder” at lower volumes due to increased dynamics. Would recommend.

I searched the audio forums and youtube audio reviews for a reasonably priced upgrade to my 15 year old AB amplifier. “Class D has achieved leaps in technology making it very accurate and audiophile worthy” they all said. So I made a leap in faith by ordering the Starkrimson DMC 2. 5. For a 500 watt amp it’s unusually small and light weight and it makes no physical noise. After connecting the balanced output from my tube preamp, connecting my JBLs and turning it on I was afraid the 2. 5 wasn’t working, but that was because the noise floor is like not even there. I played a variety of CDs. And it’s like my speakers are way clearer. As loud as I can stand it I hear no distortion. The Starkrimson DMC 2. 5 is one of my best audio purchases ever. Thanks to Leo for bring us such a great product at such a great price.

My 12″ woofers are so quick and deep now. This amp takes control of the bass with authority. The horn midrange is so revealing now with excellent sound stage and micro details. The high frequencies playing thru the AMT tweeters are sweet and airy with superb decay. This starkrimson ultra DMC 2. 5 is the single biggest improvement to my system thus far!

I had a bad experience with my first Orchard Audio Amp but I decided to take another stab at it due to the great measurements and my amp is getting a bit old. I am coming from a Parasound A51 Class A/AB amp which has served me well for the last 7 years with no problems and was fantastic. The differences are subtle but many and add up to a substantial improvement. First of all, clarity is much improved. There is less romantic bloom (which I miss) but everything is crystal clear and placed very well in the soundstage. Very low noise floor. This thing is blazing fast compared to the old Parasound. Midbass is more profound and the bass control and reach is impressive. It started off a little sibilant but has settled down and sounds smooth now. Overall improvement in almost every way over the Parasound but just not as romantic.

I’ve just taken delivery of the Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra DMC 2.5 Power Amp.
I was looking for a quality power amp to pair with my Trafomatic Evolution Line one tube pre-amplifier. I was expecting clean and dynamic power from the Starkrimson, and you certainly get that! However, the surprise for me was the finesse and control with which the sound is delivered. As mentioned by others, the control of the bass is truly exceptional. I have Tekton Perfect set speakers (12″ driver version) which I have been using with low power tube amps. At 96 db efficiency these are easy to drive but still have 300 W power handling. You would expect the 250W into 8 ohms to be overkill, but it really isn’t. It provides a level of control that my existing amps can’t match. (Line magnetic 518IA and Enleum Amp 23r). Great as both of those amps are, they can’t replicate the bass control that the Starkrimson showcases. However, that’s not the whole story. The frequency response across the board is also exceptional. I’ve heard the “straight wire with gain” analogy and agree to a point. However, the surprise for me was that a number of older recordings I have, that can get into slightly sibilant territory, sound absolutely stellar on this amp. It doesn’t round things off at all, but what I’m hearing just sounds more natural and pleasant. I’m not sure if it’s just highlighting the virtues of my preamp. The Trafomatic evolution line one is the entry level pre-amp in their line, but it’s a wonderfully simple and well-built amp. All I can say is that the match up with the Starkrimson is sublime. I was on the fence with class D amps, but after a fairly short listening session (that ended up being 6 hrs) I am sold!
Service from Leo was exceptional, and he was really helpful getting the amp to New Zealand and helping to navigate our wonderful import controls.
I can’t recommend this amp highly enough. It’s superb and a steal at the price.

Starkrimson Ultra DMC:
I just upgraded my DAC to the LAiV Harmony DAC:
My PC is my media hub (audio and 4k video), so:
– USB C output into a Singxer SU-6
– I2S into the LAiV Harmony DAC
– XLR into a balanced passive attenuator
– XLR into an Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra DMC
– Speakers are Amphion Two18 Studio Monitors
A note about GaN FET based amplifiers; They have the potential to turn the audiophile world upside down. We are used to “tuning” our systems by choosing which color of amp or pre-amp we use. Now we are moving into the realm of no color is the best color when it comes to amps and pre-amps. Let the source determine how much, if any, color you want. This offers the least amount of distortion added to the original sound, in my opinion.
In the case of this incredible LAiV Harmony DAC, I found the most clarity, resolution, and just a little bit of “sweetness” to be in NOS mode (Non Over Sampling) with the Harmony internal clocking, rather than the I2S clocking. In my setup, I found the Oversampling mode was too aggressive, less resolving and a little harsh to my ears.
Of course, the Amphion Two18 Studio Monitors are designed to give engineers an accurate microscope for making mixing and mastering decisions.
What I am alluding to in all this is that we can stop trying to “push” detail through all the layers of electronic and physical distortions and allow the subtle details to just breathe more naturally. Still not perfect yet, but getting closer. Inch by minimalist inch. 🙂
Harmony DAC with Passive Attenuator and Starkrimson Ultra DMC is a winner in my system!

I purchased a demo Ultra 2.0 from Orchard Audio to try in my system consisting of a Nottingham Space 294 turntable, Rogue RP5 tube preamp, Naim Stageline phono preamp, Arcam CD player, BluOS Node X streamer and Canalis studio monitors. I bought the amp on a trial basis to see if I could get similar sound, without the weight, heat and warm-up time of my Rogue Stereo 100 tube amplifier. I found that I slightly prefer the sound of the Ultra to that of the Rogue and have eliminated the warm up and heat issues, as well as 40 pounds of weight. The amp has a slight crispness that I find appealing while possessing very similar sound fidelity. I did have an issue with one of the power supplies which was rapidly replaced under warranty. Turnaround time from/to California was an amazing eight days! Doing business with Leo is hassle free and easy.

Over the yrs (40+) I’ve gone thru multiple amps and speakers, etc. Since I’m hard of hearing (born with hearing loss) I could only appreciate the sound from a macro perspective. However, the Ultra amp has now provided me so much more musical details which gives me much joy and appreciation. It is not glaring or dry sound but so musically informative. Went from macro to micro. So much space between instruments. An amazing amp–a keeper!

Plugged Starkrimson DMC into my system following instructions given in box. I heard a loud noise from the speakers and smelled a burning smell on the very first time. It seems that I lost my tube Dac Left channel, pre-amp and Amp Left channel. I sent it in for evaluation and Mr. Leo said it was a grounding issue with my system and that it would be $800 to repair the amp (after paying over 3k just to receive the unit). I told him to give me a refund minus the $800. I have had my system running for 3 years and now I have to get a bunch of components replaced/repaired and lost $800. Mr. Leo said the protection circuit did not protect against what happened to my system and the warranty did not apply.

Thank you for bringing your experience with the Starkrimson DMC amplifier to my attention. I fully understand the frustration you have encountered.
I would like to assure you that we take quality very seriously and the amplifiers are tested multiple times during assembly and before shipment.
In your case, you had a system wide grounding issue that took out 3 components at the same time. The amplifier itself was not responsible for this. If there was any doubt in my mind about this I would have either repaired the unit at no charge or issued you a full refund.
I suggest you evaluate the grounding in your system so as to not have a dangerous situation going forward.

This is my end game amplifier and I couldn’t be more pleased. It drives my current hungry Magnepan speakers with power to spare. I don’t hear a weak spot anywhere. Dead silent noise floor, instantaneous dynamic response, tonally transparent, every detail is there, nothing emphasized, nothing taken away. This amplifier tracks every wave form in a recording from bass drum hit to the decay of cymbals with unerring accuracy without a hint of digital artifacts.

I ordered just the Amp Modules from Leo and built both a 1500VA Toroidal 5 Channel and later would replace that 40lbs. beast with 3 used Hypex SMPS1200A (10lbs. in total). In my home the AC line Voltage only fluctuates between 118 – 120VAC. So I don’t have the dreaded AC Overvoltage issue that some Hypex built Ultra Amps have had in the past. Of course the Transformer based Amplifier will never have this issue.
Getting to the sound quality between Transformer based and Switch based power supplies. There is but it’s ever so slight. Some who came to my home and did a “shootout” between the two heard slight better phantom center. But I have my reservations on that. The new Microaudio based power supplies sound as good as the Transformer based Ultra Amplifiers. I built previously.
Two Preamps that I’ve tried including direct driving the Ultra’s with a PS Audio DirectStream DAC Sr. It’s transformer output coupled and is still my “reference” DAC with Sunlight firmware installed. I own a factory renewed 1999 Balanced Audio Technology (BAT) VK50-SE and it’s just what’s needed to give the Ultra’s that Tubey Goodness without sacrificing detail or phenomenal Bass extension. The other Preamp that came close to my BAT is the SPL Elector Black that a friend brought over to tryout with the Ultra Stereo.
Speakers that I’ve used with the Ultra are:
1. DIY open Baffle with ICE Powered dual 12″ H-Frame Subwoofers
2. KEF R3 (not Meta)
3. ELAC Uni-Fi Reference Floorstanding Speaker – UFR52
4. ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 Bookshelf Speaker
5. PMC TB2 Studio Monitors
6. 1968 Bose 901 Series 1
7. Klipsch Cornwall IV
Every Speaker in the above list shone when it came to Bass drive and extension. The midrange and treble was spot on with the aid of the BAT Tube Preamp. While the “baby” or “little” StarKrimson mono’s were never enough to drive the Bose 901’s. I’m happy to say that the Ultra’s are.
There’s no fatigue with Orchard Audio Ultra Amplifiers. And ya don’t need to “burn them in”. That’s an old Wives Tale. These are switching Amps. They are either on or they are off (I leave ’em on 24/7 to be honest). I proved this at a friends place one day.
