All About the Orchard Audio Stereo Ultra GaN Power Amp …
The Starkrimson Stereo Ultra stereo amplifier is a compact, high-performance amplifier. Designed for discerning audiophiles, recording professionals, and music lovers who refuse to compromise, it delivers exceptional resolution, lifelike dynamics, and fantastic control across every genre. Powered by next-generation gallium nitride (GaN) technology switching at 0.8 MHz and a fully balanced signal path from input to output, this amplifier delivers speed, precision, and transparency beyond traditional designs. Its advanced proprietary dual feedback architecture unlocks a level of clarity and musicality that redefines what’s possible from an amplifier of its size.
What Makes the Orchard Audio Stereo Ultra GaN Power Amp Special?
Here’s a snapshot of the key performance highlights:
- 250 W into 8 Ω / 500 W into 4 Ω — will drive almost any loudspeaker
- Fully balanced signal path from input to output for low noise and ultra-clean amplification.
- RCA and XLR inputs, with RCA inputs being converted to true balanced.
- GaN transistor technology for high switching speed and phenomenal transient response.
- 2-ohm capable and 1-ohm stable operation for very demanding loads.
- Compact footprint (17.72ʺ × 14.17ʺ × 4.4ʺ) makes placement and installation easy.
This combination of power, precision, and practical design makes the Stereo Ultra a standout choice in today’s crowded amplifier market. It isn’t just about raw watts — it’s about how those watts translate into musical realism.
Designed for Real-World Music Lovers
While some high-end gear prioritizes looks and/or specs over musicality, Orchard Audio’s approach balances both. The Starkrimson Ultra’s GaN-based Class-D design delivers extremely low noise, combined with low distortion and impressive transient response — giving you clarity and control without heat or wasted power.
Because it’s fully balanced from input to output and built with a modern proprietary dual- feedback design, the Starkrimson Ultra doesn’t just produce power — it preserves the nuance and texture of your recordings. Reviews and listening reports highlight its ability to bring out micro-detail and layering in music that can get lost in lesser amps.
Whether you’re listening to jazz, classical, rock, or electronica, this amplifier stays composed and musical through complex passages.
How the Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra GaN Power Amp Fits Into Your Audiophile System
The Orchard Audio Starkrimson Stereo Ultra is designed to integrate smoothly with balanced preamplifiers and sources. Orchard Audio intentionally focused on balanced XLR connectivity, but this amplifier has RCA inputs that convert the signal to a true balanced one, before being sent to the amplifier stage

The Starkrimson has been a total game changer. It really livened up my Philharmonic speakers and brought a level of energy I wasn’t getting before. The clarity is top notch and the whole setup just sounds way more open now. It is honestly one of the best upgrades I have made in a long time.

Extremely neutral in my set up. Amplifier allows me to hear everything upstream in an honest way. It doesn’t impart any character of its own.

This is a review of the basic Starkrimson Stereo Ultra 2. 5. While I think the sound quality of this amp is worthy of 5 stars, I’m not sure that at the full price it is the super bargain that other reviewers have claimed it is. I am coming from and comparing to another very good Class D amp with ICE modules that costs much less, I am drawn to Class D amps by their efficiency and dynamic punch. My preamp/DAC is the Minidsp SHD, and my speakers are Martin Logan XT F100s. Both power amps produce sound that is dynamic, muscular, and detailed. The sound of the Starkrimson is more natural to my ears, but not in a striking way. One could say the edges have been rounded off a bit. The soundstage also seems to be a little deeper, despite my less than optimal speaker placement. The other amp, which is rated 300 WPC through 4 ohms, cleanly reaches a higher volume without going into protection mode. While I would have been happier with the upgraded Starkrimson, I could not justify the price increase when I have this other amp that I can now use in a biamp set up.
To sum up, the Starkrimson Ultra is a terrific sounding amplifier at a fairly good price. Those who want to listen at high volume and don’t have very efficient speakers should consider the cap upgrade.

I recently purchased a latest Starkrimson ultra 2. 5 DMC. The sound is extremely clear, the background is very very quiet. Lateral separation is excellent and the bass is stupendous. I was comparing it to a Jeff Roland 125

My trusty Adcom power amp bit the dust recently. Loved that amp. Jumped on the opportunity to try the Starkrimson Ultra based on reviews. Nothing to loose with the trial period. I was shocked to find that my old amp was so colored. It was a shock to my ears until they had some time to adjust. But it was only after I upgraded the final component in my chain to my favorite power cord that I heard my new amp in all its glory. Transparency thy name is Starkrimson.

Very clear and detail sounding amp with a no ceiling dynamics. The amp itself doesn’t color the chain making it great for someone like me that want to flavor the chain using a tube preamp. I am using a Supratek Cabernet DHT preamp and I am switching tubes and testing out 45 tubes and 2a3 tubes. The Starkrimson is so transparent that I can easily hear the differences of tube in my preamp! Now I can enjoy the glory of 45 and 2a3 tubes without worrying if my speaker have enough power! If you want to hear the full potential of your chain without the worry of adding anymore “flavor” to your chain, this is the amp to buy!

Wanted to try Starkrimson ultra after all the great reviews. Hooked it up and was amazed at the sound. Details and imaging were fantastic. Best sounding amp I’ve owned and so much better in my opinion than the 2 year old Class A amp it replaces. The $11K Class A amp is from an audiophile brand that gets loads of press and YouTube reviews. I feel like I’ve turned a corner in my audiophile journey and the future is here.

This is an excellent amp with excellent low level detail, a black background, very good imaging, and a natural tonal balance. It’s only limitation is that while it has relatively high power, some very inefficient speakers in a large room may need more power if you listen at high levels.

This is a review of a dual mono with cap upgrades of Starkrimson Ultra (version 1). This is a simply superb amplifier. I have been upgrading my system recently, replacing my channel audio dac with Pontus 2 denafrips, my rega Apollo used as a transport with Jay’s audio m2 version 3 and now my homemade chip amp (using audio sector boards) with Orchard audio. This last change has made by far the greatest impact in the sound of my system. It is even more detailed than my previous amp, but it is also warmer, quieter, and far more dynamic. It allows me to really hear the sound signature of Pontus II for the first time. I hesitated to buy Orchard audio because my preamp is a unity gain denafrips Athena which puts out only 4 volts. Leo explained to me that with 4 volts I will only be able to get 160 watts at 8 ohm from the amplifier, but it turns out that this is more than enough even in my large room (15X24 feet). Of course, the volume level is on the high end of its range. In short, this is a wonderful amplifier and one that I highly recommend.

This is my first experience with a class D amp and the quality of reproduced sound is very impressive. There is great transparency and instrumental and vocal timbres are true to life. A bonus is the amp is very efficient and runs cool, especially considering how powerful it is. Looking forward to many more enjoyable listening sessions. Orchard Audio has produced an excellent amplifier at a very reasonable price. Currently powering Gallo Ultimate Reference speakers with a Benchmark DAC1 USB as source, in a balanced configuration. Musical genres sampled thus far are classical, jazz, blues, rock and Motown/soul.

[Suffice to say, Leo’s Starkrimson Stereo Ultra GaNFET Class D Amp has taken my music enjoyment a Couple of Quantum leaps Forward in realism and fidelity…I Will be Getting My Own!!!]
My final comments above were taken from my initial Orchard Audio’s Starkrimson Stereo Ultra “Steve Hoffman Music Forum” -Tour Amp- Reviewed on 6-19-22 (see below)! As stated, I ordered the amp on July 4th and received it August 1st! However, instead of just getting the 18. 8K uF capacitance/per channel middle upgrade (like the tour amp), I went for the Top Optioned Upgrades (28. 2K uF of capacitance/per channel and Dual Power Supplies-just like Tom Martin reviewed in the Absolute Sound)! Leo states improvements in amplifier transient response and lower distortion at higher power levels with his “full balanced-full optioned” Starkrimson Stereo Ultra Amp. Personally, I took Leo and his humbling engineering design comments (e-mails & phone conversations) with full Faith & Trust, purchasing the Loaded $3. 5K Optioned Starkrimson. A few weeks later, added his RCA to true balanced XLR Active Converter to create a fully balanced line level input to the amp, realizing the full sonic potential of Leo’s GaNFET design!
Well, I Have Not been disappointed these past 3 months!!! Any hesitancy or doubt I may have had Completely Disappeared as soon as I turned the new amp on…I was Blown Away! Transients, tonality, resolution, speed, attacks, decays, clarity and macro/micro dynamics are all a solid step up from the tour amp sonics and the “Absolute Best” I have ever heard out of Audio Reproduction these past 46 years! The 3D holographic Soundstage expanded deeper than before, with more air, greater separation and precise pin-point imaging, creating an extremely accurate and palatable presentation that Consistently is jaw-dropping, soul-shaking, goose-bumping and REAL! My 2-channel stereo music system (components, speakers, room) now disappears 100% of the time (even with mediocre fair recordings) with music presentations being completely divorced from the speakers…just Music’s AMAZING 2-Channel Magic!
Simply put, the overall sonic improvements over the “Tour Amp” were like going from a Really Great Stereo to a not so subtle, “HO. . SH. . , I-AM-THERE In the LIVE Recorded Venue”!!!

I’ve had the Ultra playing in my home system for the past five days alternating with my own amp which is Class a/b, biased to 15watts of class a with 210 watts into 4 ohms, stereo not dual mono and intentionally voiced with 2nd and 3rd harmonics to have bloom, warmth, sweetness which some audiophiles covet and others disdain. If only it were that simple. . .
After selling the 2Cherry and living with its replacement (Wells Audio) for the past five months, I was pretty sure I had become a ‘class a’ convert. Now, I can honestly say that I could be very happy with either the Ultra or the Wells because for some music selections I prefer the Ultra and for other music I prefer the Wells. In the perfect world, one would own both with a set up location that made switching back and forth easy based on the music being played.
Some Examples:
Luca Sustek “Nuway” and darned if on half the cuts, I preferred the clarity, detail and slam of the Ultra presentation while on other cuts I preferred the sweetness of the Wells. I’m pretty sure though that the Ultra is the more accurate portrayal of the piano.
Now another CD:
Rush – Presto the first two songs “Show Don’t Tell” and “Chain Lightning”. . . both amps sound great!!
Ultra – clear, enveloping, and slightly more low end, the sound floats but not as much as the Wells
Wells – a little less clear, slightly different tone, slightly more enveloping
Next Up:
Eric Church – Chief country music with a great beat, strong vocals and beautiful harmonics
Ultra – Clarity and Speed, the attack on the strings is awesome, snare drum and bass clarity, beautiful, big soundstage
Wells – Lush, bigger bass but not as fast or deep, also a big soundstage, strummed strings, beautiful
Alex Fox – Cest La Vie Nylon String Latin Guitar with strong back beat support and no vocals
Ultra – Deep, powerful, clear low end…. man, those strings when picked, beautiful
Wells – Deeper low end but a smidge less punch, beautiful tone when the guitar body is tapped
Hamilton Broadway Show – 2 CD set
Two words describe the difference between the amps. . . the Ultra is crystal clear, you can understand every word…. the Wells is more warm, the presentation less intense
Jethro Tull – Original Masters
“Locomotive Breath”. . . Ultra wins the piano clarity and tone Wells wins the flute and sound stage
“Witches Promise” – Ultra wins the flute and vocals. . . but the Wells vocals have more body
“Skating Away” – the xylophone on the Ultra is hauntingly beautiful
“Tales From The Woods” – both great but different
“Thick As A Brick” – again, both great but different
If you buy this amp, don’t listen to your current amp for at least a day before the Ultra arrives. Then put the Ultra in your system and listen to it exclusively for 2 or 3 days so that you really get to hear what it can do. Then try some back and forth with your amp and finally a few more days with only the Ultra.
I think there is a pretty good chance that if you buy the Ultra and try this method, you will decide before the 14 days is up that it belongs in your system permanently.
Four things about the Ultra will jump out at you with this method:
• The background between notes is completely black and the presentation is CLEAR
• It is not bright or harsh
• It has really good detail and authority from top to bottom
• It does a really good job of defining vocal and instruments locations
Leo has created something special. . . this amp deserves an audition when you are considering your next amp or if you are looking for a way to upgrade the clarity and accuracy of your system.
Leo, thanks for this great product!

Here is my review of the Starkrimson.
I used my Rogue Sphinx as a preamp and BS node to the MHDT Orchard Dac, speakers were Zu Omen mkII. I’m not big on audio jargon so I will explain it the best I can. I felt the music was surreal. Each instrument and vocals were clearly defined. Excellent tones and a warmth that I never experienced before in my system. The Omens put out some great bass. and I did try my friends FW Sit3 before the Starkrimson just to have a baseline of Class A sound, but I was underwhelmed. The music didn’t jump out at me at any point. I compared it to my Rogue and the Rogue was a tad thinner or crisper sounding, the Starkrimson just had more body and soul. At one point and I think you guys should demo this song Paloma Chesky ” House of the Rising Sun” I felt like I just got bit by a dog the way her voice just shined with this amp. I had my wife listen to the 2 amps and she preferred the Starkrimson and said it was well balanced and she felt the same way that everything was so clearly defined. I don’t know how else to put but if you see Tom Martens review on You Tube my thoughts are exactly like his, but he just explains it better.

Leonid “Leo” Ayzenshtat (founder and owner of Orchid Audio) made a generous offer to start a “Tour” of his Starkrimson Stereo Ultra Amplifier within the SHMF membership. I submitted my name to receive, evaluate and review a sample to be circulated between other interested members! Keep in mind that my findings below may be unique to my ears, my room, my music, my other associated components and my 25 years of acoustical music educational training/degree and performance background experiences!
For the past 10 years, I’ve been well pleased with the performance of my stereo AB amp (175wpc/6ohm), the Emotiva USP-2. It has been flawless in creating a live holographic and dynamic soundstage with all the genre of music I enjoy! For these evaluative listening sessions, I turned off the sub and set my stand-mount monitors full range (in-room response solid to 32hz). From June 13 through June 16, I introduced this Starkrimsion amp into my system. Leo has configured this “tour amp” with an additional 18,800uf of capacitance per channel. Using my very familiar musical library of superb vocal, instrumental, orchestration, piano and live jazz trio performances and recordings, I Immediately heard the sonic differences. Over 4 days and 25 hours of detailed listening, this turned in affirmative performance confirmations that really got my attention!
What did the Starkrimson bring to the table to improve that which I “thought” I already had in spades all these years with my AB amp? Everything! I immediately identified my sound system presentation as being more live, my spouse states more mellow and smooth. To me, the greatest improvement was to Attacks and Decays. Beginning notes and percussive sounds just start with more immediacy and effortlessness, without harsh edges or strain. Decays have become gloriously long and precise, with more sustained prime note and overtone releases as per live performances. This to me has created a much more refined, non-fatiguing and eloquent reproduced presentation that more closely represents the you-are-there live experience!
Soundstage imaging has expanded and better filled in behind the speakers, especially in the left/right horizontal plane. Stage depth and height has remained the same (was very deep and high before) thus overall, the front baffles/. 5cf cabinets have not just disappeared (as before), but have become visually Invisible (mind-blowing)! Pinpoint imaging and focus with soloist, sectional musicians and piano is rock solid, with plenty of air, body and separation that well defines their proper placements/size within the holographic soundstage. Overall, the Starkrimson has created a more mesmerizing 3D presentation that simply allows the music to just naturally exist in my listening environment!
Details, Resolution and Response of fine nuances (articulation, diction, sonic subtilities, clarity, ambiance) are now better heard and understood. I found it easier to define exact vocal lyrics that weren’t as clear to me before and better discern background supportive vocal/instrumental harmonies, counter melodies and percussive rhythms that breathe and support emotional and expressive realism into the music. Full bandwidth responses are silky, accurate and crystal clear. Timbre and articulated sonics exactly duplicate real world instrumental sounds and vocal performances. Bass is very well controlled, deep, articulate, tight and fast. I attribute part of this “sonic prowess” to the dead-silent background of the amp. With pre-amp settings at normal live listening levels, a muted volume output produces absolutely No sound/noise from my tweeters (extreme black background) with my ear resting on the baffle grill cloth. FWIW, my ears were recently tested down to 0db at 8Khz in audio-booth testing!
Being an easy monitor load, system Dynamics appear greater and with less effort and strain. Crescendos and loudest passages in the music jump out without harshness or loss of fidelity…always articulate and in control! The additional 6db of power headroom (+3db continuous, +6db of peak Headroom) over my (1/5 the investment cost) Emotiva amp is not what I attribute this graceful expansion of sound to. My normal listening sessions are typically enjoyed at 85db continuous levels, with peaks that reach 95 to 105db! With my 87db efficient monitors, I had plenty of clean power before, but believe the Orchard Audio Amp offers what some have akin to Class A Tube Amp Sonics in the Starkrimson!
Overall, I left the unit on for 4 days straight, with my small dedicated listening room (990cf) never feeling warm or uncomfortable (like with my A/B amp). My spouse has commented on how “Musical” my system sounds with the new amp and that She will enjoy the music more than ever…Agreed!! Build is Very Solid and good looks, as always, are simply in the eyes of the beholder (I like it). In 2021, I returned $8K worth of electronics/accessories (Regenerator, SACD, Interconnects), as their contributions couldn’t Improve my System’s Synergy. Suffice to say, Leo’s Starkrimson Stereo Ultra Class D GanFET Amp has taken my music enjoyment a Couple of Quantum leaps Forward in realism and fidelity…I Will be Getting My Own!!!

Now that I’ve had a couple of months to live with the Starkrimson Stereo Ultra, I’m even more impressed than I was initially, mainly because I can’t find any sonic flaws. It’s an amp that is perfectly comfortable driving inefficient, 4-ohm speakers to loud levels without any strain or edginess. Great recordings sound great, while mediocre recordings at least sound like music and are perfectly enjoyable. The soundstage is wide and inner details shine through. What’s not to like?
My previous amp was the Merrill Audio Taranis, Merrill’s brief excursion into a modestly-priced Class D amp built around the Hypex Ncore N500 ($2500 for a stereo amp with 400 watts into 8 ohms, 600 into 4 ohms, now discontinued). Great amp and a great value. But Merrill has moved on. His new amps are pricey but beautifully built, all of them using GaN transistors. I think the GaN amps sound better, so the Strarkimson Stereo Ultra was my chance to have a GaN amp I could afford.
My current speakers are Magnepan . 7s, which have a true sensitivity of only 80dB and present a sub-4-ohm load. Lots of watts into 4 ohms are required. I was happy with the Taranis, but I briefly auditioned a pair of Merrill Element 116s and was really impressed. Then a friend loaned me a pair of PS Audio Stellar M1200 mono amps. Although not as revealing as the Merrill monoblocks, the Stellar amps were more affordable while sounding dynamic and very listenable. I had decided to buy the Stellar amps until I got in touch with Leo and borrowed a prototype of the Starkrimson Stereo Ultra, after which it was an easy choice: The Orchard Starkrimson Stereo Ultra was smooth and dynamic like the PS Audio, but had better resolution and transparency, like the Merrill. Ultimately, I bought one with all the power-supply upgrades, including dual mono, as I felt that it made a difference when driving the Maggies.
As I mentioned in the first paragraph, there’s not a lot to say about the sound, except that it seems flawless to me. Bottom line, I smile every time I crank up the tunes.

The Ultra arrived earlier than expected, for a variety of reasons which I won’t go into here. Suffice it to say that Leo kept me in mind and made an offer that he knew I wouldn’t refuse.
Right out of the box (which, to my mind, should be a little heavier gauge– I am only a few hundred miles from Leo’s location, and even so the shipping guerrillas put a lot of dings in the box) the Ultra meshed with my other gear very effectively.
Great detail and pretty even emphasis of the full frequency range. The sound stage provided was wide, deep and detailed. Timbre was delightful, with note decay so sweet.
Its been a month or so now and things just get better. I will say its a ‘break in’ process, and I know many do not buy that. But a few days ago I noticed a real coming together of things. . All of a sudden things were just right for me. Imaging became holographic, the mid-range warmed up a touch and it all sounded “real”
Yeah, I know, the usual audioholic jargon. But something is happening and I like it very much.

The Ultra sounds great, of course all I have to compare it to is my Peachtree Nova 300 which I thought sounded pretty good until I heard the Ultra. From a musical stand point it completely blows the 300 away, as I told my wife it’s like going from black and white TV to color, the music is so much more detailed. Also better depth and sound stage as compared to the 300. I always look at return on investment, and I can honestly say the ROI on the Ultra is excellent. I’ve been hearing about benefits of ganfet’s for several years now, and how they were going to be the future of audio due to their speed and efficiency as compared to mosfet’s. In my opinion the prophecy’s are true. I do wish the ultra was more powerful, the room I’m set up in is fairly large with high ceilings, and with my speakers, the 300 was just a bit more then adequate power wise. The Ultra does the job but with no reserve power, another 100 watts per channel would be great.

I have been looking for an amplifier upgrade to my system for quite awhile. I have been using a custom Class AB amplifier for number of years but I missed the power and the bass extension of the Tripath Class D amp I had in the early 2000s.
It wasn’t perfect in the high frequencies but bass control and large scale dynamics were hard to fault.
Fast forward a decade or so and newer technology has come along. Enter Leo Ayzenshtat’s Starkrimson Ultra Class D design it has all of the considerable advantages of Class D without the weaknesses that earlier Class D designs had.
I have been running this amplifier continuously for the last eight days, so far has not put a foot wrong and at this point in time I don’t expect it to. The bass extension and control is noticeably better than my Class AB amp. It’s basically superior across the entire frequency range with the blackest background I have heard to date.
Perhaps the key take away is that this amplifier is faithful to the source. It has no unnatural artifacts accompanying the music. It’s a keeper.
Thanks Leo.

I love this amp. It is fast, accurate and detailed. The music and vocals are clearer, the bass is improved. The instruments are distinct and separated. It has no sonic characteristic such as most amps do.

Great value. Comparable to amps I’ve on hand namely David Berning ZH 230, NuPrime EVO1 and Shindo Sinhonia, all cost 3 times higher. One of the best I’ve heard and certainly a winner within its price range.

I owned a pair of the Orchard Starkirmson mono’s but needed a little more power for less efficient speakers in a larger basement room.
The Ultra Stereo is more of the same greatness that is embodied by the mono’s, and even perhaps a step above. Transparency, spaciousness, balanced frequency response, bass control, extended but smooth treble. . . . the Ultra has this in spades.
It could be the additional power, but I get the sense of even better bass control with the Ultra over the mono’s; a depth and tightness/tunefullness that has great impact.
I had said that the mono’s combine the best of analog and digital to me, and I echo this even more with the Ultra. I do not miss tubes, class A, or other types of class D amps. . . .
Bravo on another great product from the Orchard!

Longtime fan of Orchard Audio and everything that Leo has designed and built but the Ultra is another step in terms of fidelity. Rich and detailed without being overly analytical, drive and grip, brilliant low end, gorgeous midrange and extra levels of transparency that lift a veil from your music. I’ve tried this with both the PecanPi and a super high end pre/DAC and it sounded stunning with both and easily held its own. It’s a product that can be the heart of your system and grow with it. Highly recommended.

Sorry if this is the wrong place. I’m wondering if this product is in the came peer group as Purifi. If so, how would you compare/contrast both of them. If even suggesting a comparison is an insult, I apologize.

The opportunity to audition the Ultra became a tipping point. Leo is an engineer not bound by old school engineering . His amp is a realization of the benefits of GaN. The Ultra has improved harmonic integrity, dynamics, and resolution over traditional silicon. the Ultra is a must audition in your system.

I was able to audition a prototype last weekend, comparing it to a couple of other Class-D amps. One amp was considerably more expensive at $6k. I won’t mention the brand because the manufacturer makes truly excellent amps and I don’t want to embarrass them. Bottom line: the Orchard Starkrimson Stereo Ultra made my system come alive in a way I didn’t think possible.
My speakers are Magnepan . 7s, which are a 4-ohm load with about 80dB sensitivity. (Magnepan claims 86dB but that isn’t accurate. ) The Maggies are very transparent but somewhat lacking in dynamics and authority even with powerful amps. With the Starkrimson driving them, the sound became more lively and dynamic but without a trace of harshness. The bass was on a par with the $6k amp, as was the treble smoothness, but the Starkrimson was more open. Playing reference tracks that I’ve heard dozens of times on the . 7s, I was frequently startled — literally — by the realism of instruments and vocals. Micro-detail, textures and subtle dynamics that I hadn’t noticed before became clear. The Starkrimson made these already-transparent Magnepan speakers even more so, and I wanted to listen to all my favorite music all over again.
